Home Care Services can vary from non-medical services, such as, assistance with everyday activities like dressing and bathing, household tasks and meal preparation to promote independence and safety to full-time skilled nursing care for chronic conditions. In between those two are situations where a patient requires temporary skilled care to rehab from an injury, illness or a hospital stay.
Assistance with everyday living scenarios can typically be provided by non-medical personnel. Sometimes they require medical assistance with prescriptions or dosing schedules. Home care, non-medical services such as homemaker care, home health aides, companion care or assistive care aides enable people with certain disabilities or chronic illnesses to remain independent and participate in activities at home, at work, and in the community.
For patients with more serious chronic illnesses or disabilities, it may be necessary to bring in full-time skilled nursing care to allow the individual to remain in their own home.
Short-term home health care is usually physician directed to enable a patient time to recover or rehab from surgery, illness or a prior hospital stay. The services that are required may include short-term nursing, physical, speech or occupational therapy. Home health aides may be needed during the recovery period. These services are usually provided on a short-term basis until recovery goals are reached.
Finally, there are some agencies or organizations that are also able to provide long-term care planning and financial services to help the patient and his family navigate the financial field of health insurance, long-term care insurance, Medicare, Medicaid and private pay options.
You need to understand the services that your loved one may require to provide the appropriate support service. The information provided under Home Care Services will include information on a number of organizations that provide services in this area. You need to work with your medical team and social services workers to find the right fit. This assessment is often best accomplished if you can anticipate some of the potential upcoming health care needs potentially facing you or your loved one. The enclosed material should be helpful in that process or in answering questions.
"When you or a family member needs help due to an accident, illness, or worsening of a medical problem, finding help can feel like navigating in the dark.
Unfortunately, there are no national standards of care to guide families. You may have assumptions about what certain professionals can do to assist you only to find out that your specific state has restrictions on non-medical care."

"Many older Americans choose to move into some form of senior housing. But each year more and more choose to stay in their homes. It’s not a black-and-white choice, and whatever arrangement you choose, home care can dramatically expand your options."
An April 2023 article by AgingInPlace.org addresses the possible options and how to decide on direction.
"For many these days, the ideal approach to aging involves aging in place— staying in your home and taking the steps necessary to remain independent for as long as possible. Many are still choosing the better-known options: retirement communities, assisted living facilities, and other institutions designed to care for older people. But an increasing number of seniors are choosing to stay at home and get whatever help they need to remain there."
This article is a comprehensive look at the options to be considered.

The Arizona In-Home Care Association (AZNHA) is a 501(c)6 non-profit organization that was formed to be the primary voice for the home care industry in Arizona. Whether it be best practices, consumer protection, education, or general information about our industry, AZNHA is the foremost leader for in-home care. We invite you to tour our site to learn more about us, our members, what we stand for and to find care services for your loved ones.
The State of Arizona does not require non-medical home care businesses to be licensed. That means there is no regulatory body or government agency in Arizona that oversees or regulates the delivery of non-medical home care services to consumers.
An effort to introduce legislation to regulate the non-medical home care industry in Arizona was shot down at the Sunrise phase by a Legislative Committee on December 9, 2010. The prospects of any regulation for our industry looks dismal for the next several years because of Arizona’s anti-regulatory Legislature. This atmosphere creates all the more need for the AZNHA.
In Arizona, anyone can open and operate a non-medical home care company. We believe the lack of licensure by the state creates an industry that has no standards of service, no over-sight, and no criterion of business ethics. The results are a variety of non-medical home care business organizations that deliver their services in a varied manner, exercising a diverse business ethic delivering those services. As a result of the differences in service delivery and business ethic, the consumer has been, and continues to be, vulnerable and the industry’s integrity suffers.
The Arizona In-Home Care Association’s focus is to establish and enhance the credibility of non-medical home care provider businesses for consumers by requiring Members of the Association to adhere to the Association’s strict standards and code of business ethics. These credentialing standards are available on this Web site for consumers and providers alike. The Association maintains that its standards and ethics are a common sense approach founded on principles of consumer protection and advocacy.
The Arizona In-Home Care Association (AZNHA) represents a coalition of businesses in, and affiliated with, the in-home care industry who are dedicated to consumer protection and advocacy. In 2007, the Association was created to enhance the image and confidence of in-home care provider businesses in the eyes of consumers. AZNHA accomplished this by establishing a Code of Business Ethics and Minimum Standards of Delivery of Services for all its members to adhere to. (Please refer to our Standards page for details.) AZNHA members agree to adhere to our Code of Business Ethics.
Further, Members commit to comply with, and maintain, the Association’s Credentialing Standards of Service for the delivery of in-home care services. In so doing, they are demonstrating their business standards to the consumer by becoming a Member in Good Standing of the Association.
Home and Community Based Services (HCBS) provides help with daily activities while allowing many individuals to remain in their own homes or live with their families by reducing the need for institutional care.

"Devoted Guardians has been committed to improving the lives of seniors and disabled individuals in Phoenix since 2007. We are an in-home care provider of comprehensive home support services to help seniors and disabled individuals who need assistance with daily living."
"We Are Here to Help
At Devoted Guardians, we are committed to providing comprehensive care for the lives of seniors and disabled individuals, easing the stress on you and your family. Caring for an aging parent or disabled family member can be overwhelming, and most families simply aren’t prepared to provide the type of care their loved one needs. Choosing to place them in an assisted living or nursing care facility can be even more heartbreaking. If you are part of the “sandwich generation,” sandwiched between raising children and caring for elder parents or other aging family members, this can be a difficult time for you and your family."
