A History of Compassion
Since 1957, the Arizona Humane Society has fostered the belief that every pet deserves a good life. What once began as a small shelter established by a compassionate group of volunteers has since grown to become the state’s largest animal welfare and protection agency, as well as the state’s designated responder for animals in distress during natural disasters.
Over the years, we’d started various programs to save the lives of Arizona’s most vulnerable pets. But in 2013, we knew we had to push harder to create the pet-friendly future we wanted to see. In the face of a pet overpopulation crisis, we began lifesaving programs like our Parvo ICU, Maternity Suites, and Bottle Baby ICU & Kitten Nursery to care for animals who are often euthanized in other shelters.
As a result, we’ve decreased euthanization by 83%—that’s 130,000 additional lives saved. We’re working hard to transform the very notion of animal welfare in Arizona, and we’re proud to say that many of these first-of-their-kind programs, services, education and communication techniques that have been emulated by organizations all over the world.

In recognition and appreciation of U.S. veterans’ service to our country, Pinal County Animal Control and Care (PCACC)’s Pets for Vets program waives adoption fees for pets over 1 year of age.
Adopters participating in the Pets for Vets program will be responsible for paying the $15 license fee for adopted dogs (no fee for cats). Veterans wishing to participate in the program are asked to provide verification of veteran, reservist or active-duty status. The following documentation is accepted: Military ID, DD214 Military Discharge Certificate, Honorable Discharge Certificate, Letter from the U.S. Military Center in St. Louis or Letter from the Maryland Veterans Administration Service Program. Start your application online.
NOT FINDING THE RIGHT PET?
Try looking on Home to Home. Home to Home is a direct-to-adopter tool for pet guardians looking to re-home their animal. Take a moment to fill out the Pinal Pet Request to receive email notifications when potential animals of your interest come into the shelter.
RIGHTS OF ANIMAL CARE & CONTROL TO REFUSE ADOPTION
The Staff at Animal Care and Control hope that every adoption is successful. That is why we follow the procedures we do. We take it very seriously and ask for your patience while we go through the process together. If, for any reason, our staff does not believe that a successful adoption can take place, Animal Care and Control reserves the right to deny the adoption.

What vaccinations do you require?
To maintain a safe, comfortable environment, we require all pets to be current on their rabies vaccinations and to wait at least 48 hours after any vaccinations before checking in. Proof of rabies vaccination in the form of paperwork is required. The waiting period helps to ensure your pet isn't sore at the injection site, which can cause irritability or lethargy. This waiting period also is to prevent stressing a pet who may be experiencing an unexpected allergic reaction from a vaccine/vaccination. Puppies and kittens between 8 weeks and 4 months of age (3 months in Indiana) may receive services in the salon without vaccinations. In New York City, 6-month Bordetella and DHPP with Adenovirus are also required. In Iowa, DPP with Adenovirus is required. In Connecticut, proof of town license is required. Please note: All pets must be in good health prior to receiving any grooming services.
Vaccinations must be administered at least 48 hours prior to arrival under the guidance of a licensed veterinarian. However, we prefer vaccinations be administered 10 days before check-in. Written proof is required. You must also show proof of meeting state and local pet boarding vaccination requirements. Please check with your local PetSmart to verify/confirm your local requirements. For cat guests to stay, we also require FVRCP.
DPP with Adenovirus (Distemper, Parvovirus & Parainfluenza) - 1 or 3-yr. vaccine required.
Bordetella - Required every 6 months, however, we recommend every 6 months & at least 7 days prior to check-in to ensure maximum efficiency & protection against Kennel Cough. Please note: many veterinarians administer this vaccine only by request.
Rabies - 1 or 3-yr. vaccine required.
Canine Influenza - Not required, but highly recommended to help protect against Canine Influenza respiratory illness. Consult your veterinarian.
Leptospirosis - Not required, but highly recommended to help protect against the Leptospirosis infection. Consult your veterinarian. fleas & ticks - In addition to vaccinations, all dogs should be flea and tick free. Campers with signs of fleas and/or ticks will be treated at our Grooming Salon at the pet parent’s expense prior to check-in.
Additional requirements - Campers must be at least 4 months of age. We cannot accept intact (unneutered) male dogs, pregnant females or females in heat. Furthermore, for the safety of all animals and associates, we cannot accept dogs of the “bully breed” classification or wolves/wolf hybrids including American Pit Bull Terriers, Miniature Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, American Bull Dogs, Bull Terriers or mixed breeds that have the appearance or characteristics of one of these breeds.
At the discretion of PetSmart, some pets may not be permitted.

Our Vision:
A no-kill Arizona that provides compassionate care for animals and the people who love them.
The Arizona Animal Welfare League is the largest and oldest no-kill shelter in Arizona. A “no-kill” shelter is an animal shelter that does not kill healthy or treatable animals even when the shelter is full, reserving euthanasia for terminally ill animals or those considered dangerous to public safety.
AAWL is a registered 501c3 non-profit organization, tax ID 23-7149453. All donations are tax-deductible to the extent allowable by law.
AAWL rescues, rehabilitates, and re-homes more than 4,000 dogs and cats that are abandoned or that have been surrendered by their owners. We do this primarily by rescuing them from other shelters in Maricopa County where they are likely to be euthanized due to the lack of time and resources to care for them. At any one time, our shelter will hold 140 cats and 190 dogs. We also have a foster parent network of approximately 90 families who provide care and shelter in their homes for puppies and kittens that are too young to be adopted, and those animals that are recovering from medical procedures or that need socialization before adoption.
All pets offered for adoption have been spayed or neutered; micro-chipped and are current on all vaccinations. Any medical treatments needed, including surgeries, are provided by our medical team and all animals are evaluated by our behavior department. Learn more about our Phoenix veterinary services and animal clinic.
AAWL not only adopts companion animals into loving homes, but we also hold a leadership position in the community in education and animal welfare issues. Check out our extensive dog and obedience training classes.
